HomeAway is working with local governments, the travel industry and medical experts to ensure homeowners, property managers and holidaymakers are receiving aligned, clear cleanliness recommendations.

Homeowners and property managers now have clear information for disinfecting high-touch surfaces, building in time between bookings to avoid back-to-back stays and stocking antibacterial handwashes, cleaners and hand sanitizers for guests.

HomeAway is adding enhanced safety steps partners are taking to property descriptions so holidaymakers can choose places to book that meet their expectations. Homeowners and property managers will be able to report if the property is being cleaned with disinfectant, if guests can check-in and out without any person-to-person contact, and whether the property is unavailable for 24 hours between guests. Once property owners have supplied that information, HomeAway will add it to the property descriptions that holidaymakers see on the site and app.

In another addition to HomeAway, families will be able to use search filters to see holiday rentals with the highest cleanliness reviews from other holidaymakers. Former guests have already provided cleanliness reviews on 900,000 HomeAway properties. Even before COVID-19, cleanliness was a top expectation for holidaymakers when renting a holiday home, and holidaymakers say their most valuable source of information is people who have already stayed in the holiday home, cottage or apartment.

Flexible Cancellation Search Filter

When looking for properties with flexible cancellation policies, families can use HomeAway search filters to find holiday homes that provide a full refund when cancelling by a specific date. HomeAway will also highlight listings with the most relaxed cancellation policies, making it easier for families to find holiday homes that offer free cancellation closer to their check-in date.

“HomeAway’s homeowners and property managers told us that in response to COVID-19, adopting more flexible cancellation policies is the number one thing they are considering doing in the near future, so we’re supporting that by making the changes easy for them and highlighting the nearly a million properties that already have flexible cancellation policies and those that are adopting them,” said Hurst.

LONDON—The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents the global travel and tourism private sector, has unveiled a range of new worldwide measures to restart the sector.
The measures have been designed to rebuild confidence among consumers so they can travel safely once the restrictions are lifted.
The new “Safe Travels” protocols provide consistency to destinations and countries, as well as guidance to travel providers, operators and travelers, about the new approach to health and hygiene in the post COVID-19 world.
The health and safety of travelers and workers is put at the heart of the new global protocols, which have been drawn up by WTTC members. Based on the best available medical evidence, following guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they also avoid the emergence of multiple standards, which would only delay the sector’s recovery, according to the organization.
Gloria Guevara, president/CEO, WTTC, said, “We have learned from the past, especially after the tragedy of 9/11, where the lack of coordination among governments and with the private sector caused long-lasting travel disruption, higher costs and a longer recovery time. Coordination and alignment within the travel and tourism sector is vital to ensure that robust global measures are put in place to help rebuild confidence and which are jointly embraced by the governments and private sector.
“We are delighted that, for the first time ever, the global private sector has aligned around these new Safe Travels protocols, which will create consistency across the sector,” she added. “Now we are calling on governments to adopt them so that they can be implemented globally and restore much-needed confidence in order to restart the travel and tourism sector.”
Evidence from WTTC’s Crisis Readiness report, which looked at 90 different types of crises, highlights the importance of public-private cooperation to ensure that smart policies and effective communities are in place to enable a more resilient travel and tourism sector.
WTTC is devising the new Safe Travels protocols following close consultation with its members, as well as industry associations like Airports Council International (ACI), Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
These will apply across the main industries within travel and tourism, including hospitality, aviation, airports, cruise operators, retail, transportation, MICE and tour operators among others.
Detailed discussions are taking place with key stakeholders and organizations in each industry within the sector to ensure maximum buy-in, alignment and practical implementation, with hospitality and retail guidelines being released.

15.7% of Spaniards are funding their holiday with some form of loan, such as consumer loans and credit cards, according to a study by iAhorro, a bank credit comparison firm. The alternatives to these two modes of financing are sufficient and for the right choice, each stakeholder must take into account all possible charges as they depend on many factors, some of which are the total amount of the loan, the repayment period as well as of course, the applicant's financial situation. This year, the Total Annual Effective Interest Rate (APR), which is the entirety of the loan to be paid in interest terms, reaches 20%. In general, there is the possibility of large bank loans in Spain, such as Bankinter, which gives loans up to 90,000 euros, while the repayment period can reach 96 months (eight years). Smaller amounts in shorter payouts may have a higher interest rate than larger amounts in long-term payback. For example, Santander Bank, Préstamo Expansión, for an amount of € 2,500 and a repayment period of 18 months, has an APR 20,48%, while the same loan of € 60,000 with a repayment of 96 months has an APR of 11,63%. Additionally, one needs to consider whether they can get a specific loan option as, for example, the Santander loan, Préstamo Consumo 1, 2, 3 is only given to account holders in the Cuenta 1, 2, 3 bank deposit account and the agreed interest rate is mainly dependent on the client's financial condition. Evo Banco, on the other hand, has loans whose interest rates are not very variable, which is around 9.27%. In addition, attention should be paid to any additional loan costs, as some banks have a commission of between 1% and 2.5% of the total amount received at the beginning of this issue. With regard to credit cards, the APR may exceed 20%. One that should be taken care of by those who want to obtain a credit card is if there is an extra cost to owning the card. Most banks do not charge, or charge little, a card if their owner is also a customer of that organization. For example, the El Corte Inglés credit card charges EUR 12 if it is paid on a quarterly basis and does not charge it if the payment is made on a monthly basis. Particularly important for the right choice of credit card, is the evaluation of the various discounts offered by each card. According to HelpMyCash, a business related to the aforementioned, household payments to repay their debts must not exceed a total of 35% of their income.
